Portsmouth new signing could be announced in days as Cullen speaks out

Portsmouth have started their transfer window with a bang after confirming the signing of Australian striker Adrian Segecic.

However, it’s widely agreed that several more recruits are needed to ensure Pompey aren’t dragged into a relegation battle this season.

Andy Cullen suggests another Portsmouth transfer is close

Portsmouth will jet off to Bratislava for a pre-season training camp on Saturday (5 July), and the club’s chief executive Andy Cullen suggested at least one other new face could join the squad by then.

In an interview with The News (30 June), he said: “Potentially, something could be done before Slovakia. There’s lots of talking going on; whether you can actually get these done prior to then remains to be seen.

“I wouldn’t commit to that. Timing isn’t sometimes within our control, but it’s progressing.”

Cullen didn’t name any names, and it’s unclear which deals could be completed before the end of the week.

Pompey have recently been linked with Danish midfielder Pelle Mattsson, who addressed the rumours in a recent interview, although it’s thought the transfer fee could be a stumbling block for The Blues.

A number of free agents have also been connected with a move to Fratton Park, and these types of transfers can often be completed more quickly.

John Mousinho is desperate to recruit more centre-midfielders, while wingers and strikers could also be targeted this summer.

It’s better for Portsmouth to be patient than reckless

Portsmouth were fortunate enough to be able to do a lot of business early on in the transfer window last summer.

Josh Murphy, Jordan Williams and Jordan Archer were all signed in June of 2024.

Perhaps that has led to some impatience among Portsmouth fans this time around.

While it’s better to get your transfers sealed early, that’s not always possible, and it’s better to buy well than to buy fast. Portsmouth haven’t ascended from League Two to the Championship by spending recklessly, and the club isn’t going to start doing that now.

Mousinho and his recruitment team are delighted to have landed Segecic on a free transfer, and there is plenty of time left to complete some similarly savvy deals.

The most important thing is that the squad is ready and capable of improving on last season’s performance in the Championship.
