Exclusive: Portsmouth in hunt to sign Alex Robertson’s friend, ‘he ticks all the boxes’

Portsmouth’s hunt for Australian players is seemingly not over.

The Blues completed the signing of Adrian Segecic this summer, increasing the number of Aussies in their first-team squad to four.

On top of that, there are rumours that John Mousinho is interested in bringing Alex Robertson back to Fratton Park.

Robertson enjoyed a successful loan spell at Pompey in 2023-24, and it’s suggested he could leave Cardiff during this transfer window.

And now, Alex’s father, Mark Robertson, has commented on another Aussie who has been linked with a move to the South Coast.

Nectarios Triantis ‘ticks all the boxes’ for Mousinho

Nectarios Triantis is an Australian midfielder plucked from the A-League by Sunderland in 2023.

The 22-year-old has failed to break into the first team on Wearside, having made only three appearances in a Mackems shirt.

He was loaned out to Hibernian last season, but will face a bigger struggle to break through at Sunderland now they’ve been promoted to the Premier League.

Mark Robertson works as a mentor for Australian footballers who play in England, so he knows Triantis well.

Speaking exclusively to Pompey News, he suggested that the midfield ace would be a smart signing for Pompey.

He said: “He’s a good player with a good family, so he ticks all the boxes.

I don’t know too much about the interest with him, but he comes from a family of seven children, and I know at least three or four of them are very good footballers.

“He’s been on loan at Hibs. He’s good mates with Alexander [Robertson].

“[He’s] another product of the kids that came through with Alexander, along with Segecic.”

Triantis could prove to be a cut-price alternative for Alex Robertson

It’s no secret Mousinho is hunting for centre-midfielders, and that’s a big reason behind the gossip of Alex Robertson returning to Portsmouth.

Cardiff will make it difficult for the Blues to complete that transfer though, as they’re expected to demand a transfer fee beyond Pompey’s budget.

It’s a different story with Triantis.

Sunderland may want to cut ties with him, as they’re now seeking out players who are proven in the Premier League.

The Black Cats paid Central Coast Mariners £300,000 for Triantis, and are unlikely to want a higher transfer fee than that for him.

If they still believe in the potential of their young midfielder, a loan deal could be on the cards.

That would allow the youngster to prove he can make a mark in English football. And what better place than Portsmouth to do that? Any Australian would surely find it easy to settle in at Fratton Park these days.
