John Mousinho ‘re-opens Portsmouth door’ for Tom McIntyre

Portsmouth are a difficult team to predict in the Championship next season, despite a positive end to the 2024/25 campaign.

The South Coast club finished last season on a high, but the second tier will be stacked full of quality yet again next term.

Perhaps the most significant piece of business Pompey have carried out is retaining John Mousinho, who was a wanted man due to the stellar job he has done at Fratton Park.

With a few significant bits of business done, Mousinho has now spoken out on the future of Tom McIntyre.

McIntyre to be given another chance by Mousinho

Portsmouth have already signed Adrian Segecic, who joined from the Australian side Sydney FC for an undisclosed fee.

His settling in will be made easier by Pompey’s previous acquisition of Hayden Matthews, who also arrived from the same side last year.

While not many would have seen the duo play, supporters have learned to trust the process at Fratton Park.

The same could be said of Tom McIntyre, who has only made 14 Portsmouth appearances since signing in January 2024.

McIntyre spent the second half of last season on loan at Charlton Athletic, where he made just four league starts.

Despite his lack of playing time in League One, Mousinho has seemingly reopened the door for him at Fratton Park while speaking to The News (3 July).

He said: “We will see how Tom reports back.

“We are big fans of Tom here in terms of his contributions that he’s had over the year-and-a-half he has been here, and we’re looking forward to getting him going again.”

McIntyre must impress Mousinho in pre-season

Looking at Mousinho’s options, it is clear that the 39-year-old has a surplus of centre-backs at his disposal.

Perhaps Pompey’s boss is all too aware of what happened with injuries last year and wants numbers in the hub of his backline.

However, McIntyre faces a battle to even be considered for selection and must impress his manager in pre-season.

With Matthews back from injury, Mousinho now has six recognised centre-backs within his ranks to choose from.

Regan Poole and Conor Shaughnessy will surely be ahead of McIntyre, along with Matthews, who will be keen to impress.

While Mousinho has given McIntyre a timely confidence boost, he has it all to do this summer.
