Portsmouth fans ‘should be grateful to Eisner’ as EFL embargo news emerges

Portsmouth have been on the up and up since Michael Eisner took over the club.

The former Disney CEO has overseen Portsmouth’s rise from League One to the Championship, and the club looks in good shape to continue progressing.

Still, it seems some Portsmouth fans can’t help but complain about the ownership.

The lack of willingness to spend big in the transfer market is a common point of contention among some supporters.

However, these individuals would be well advised to explore what’s happening to some of Pompey’s Championship rivals before they post their social media comments.

Hull City become the latest club to suffer over financial woes

Sheffield Wednesday players are now free to terminate their contracts due to the financial mismanagement of the club this year.

The players weren’t paid on time in May or June, which according to FIFA rules, allows them to walk out on the club after 15 days of written notice.

A handful of players have reportedly already done this, although this hasn’t yet been officially confirmed.

The Owls are also under a transfer embargo because of their unpaid debts, so they wouldn’t be able to replace any players who do leave.

They’re not the only club being mismanaged either. Hull City are also set to be issued with a transfer embargo over their failure to pay Aston Villa for Louie Barry’s loan deal last season.

These clubs will surely be among the favourites to get relegated from the Championship this season, and that’s purely down to the poor financial decisions made off the pitch.

Portsmouth fans should be grateful for Eisners

Portsmouth have one of the smallest transfer budgets in the Championship, but that’s because Eisner wants to grow the club sustainably.

Portsmouth fans should be grateful for this.

It’s a more intelligent strategy than breaking the bank on a foreign striker, praying he gets you promoted and being financially ruined if he doesn’t.

It’s certainly smarter than whatever Sheffield Wednesday and Hull have been doing.

Admittedly, it’s a loud-mouthed minority on social media calling for Eisner to spend silly money on new players. Most intelligent Portsmouth fans can see that he’s doing a fantastic job, even if they are secretly dreaming that their club will spend whatever it takes to sign Abu Kamara.

Still, it’s important to express gratitude to Eisner for leading Portsmouth to this position and keeping them clear of the sticky financial situations being suffered by other Championship clubs.
