Nathan Ferguson heads to Slovakia to join Portsmouth squad in shock transfer twist

Portsmouth have recently jetted off for their pre-season training camp in Slovakia and they have been joined by a pair of fresh faces.

John Mousinho will have his squad hard at work on the trip as they prepare for the upcoming Championship campaign, and it has also provided the perfect opportunity for the 39-year-old to get a good look at a couple of trialists.

Stuart Moore is one half of the duo who have joined the Pompey squad, after the 30-year-old shot stopper was released by Morecambe back in May.

It has also been revealed that Nathan Ferguson is the other free agent to have joined the ranks of the South Coast outfit.

Nathan Ferguson on trial with Pompey after a year out of the game

Ferguson came through the ranks at West Brom, and broke into the first team squad at The Hawthorns back in the 2019/20 campaign. It has now been revealed by Andrew Moon via X (8 July), that he is on trial at Pompey.

His recent involvement with Portsmouth certainly comes as something of a shock, given the way his career has played out in the last few years.

The left-back departed his boyhood club back in 2020 and joined Crystal Palace, but a series of damaging injuries badly halted his development in South London.

The 24-year-old made a sole competitive appearance for the Eagles, before he was released last summer. Since then, he hasn’t kicked a ball in the professional game, and as a result, news of his potential Portsmouth arrival will have surely raised a few eyebrows.

Portsmouth will hope to have found a gem in Ferguson

The Fratton Park outfit have gained a reputation as a club who are always keen to try and find hidden value in players, with the prime example of that being their signings of numerous Australians.

Ferguson may not look like a glamorous signing on the face of it, but if Mousinho and Co. could keep him fit, it could turn into a shrewd piece of business.

The defender’s catastrophic injury record has seen him discarded and overlooked by clubs over the last year or so, but if Pompey are prepared to offer him an opportunity, then it could turn into a deal which provides excellent value.
