‘Portsmouth will reap long-term rewards after controversial Mousinho decision’

John Mousinho has had to make plenty of controversial decisions to help Portsmouth rise up the English pyramid.

Some of Pompey’s biggest heroes from their League One title victory have left Fratton Park in recent months as the manager looks to progress the South Coast club further.

These decisions have obviously upset some of the fanbase as they say goodbye to some of their favourite players.

However, Mousinho has shown no signs of slowing down as move transfer news emerges from Portsmouth.

Matt Ritchie set to leave Portsmouth

Matt Ritchie looks set to leave Portsmouth this summer, despite only moving to Fratton Park a year ago.

Last season, the 35-year-old proved to be an integral part of Mousinho’s plans, featuring 39 times across the campaign.

However, Ritchie is likely to depart Portsmouth, after he was left out of the pre-season squad in Slovakia to look for a new club.

This caused outrage from Portsmouth’s fans, with many wanting Ritchie to stay.

However, there are many long-term benefits of letting the right-winger go.

At 35 years old, Portsmouth have to now start focusing on their younger players if they are to have continued success in the Championship.

Adrian Segecic has just joined Pompey, and the Aussie plays on the wing. Therefore, it would be stupid for Mousinho to sign the 21-year-old, only to bench him for Ritchie.

On top of this, having the 35-year-old as a squad player makes little sense. The former Newcastle man is likely on high wages and may want first-team football.

Therefore, it makes sense for all parties to move on this summer, ready for the new campaign.

Mousinho needs further reinforcements on the wing

If Mousinho is to go through with Ritchie’s sale, it would make sense for Portsmouth to target a new winger this summer.

Whether this is on loan or a permanent deal, an additional back-up who is happy to sit on the bench would be ideal.

Mousinho must ensure that the South Coast club has quality in depth, or they risk potentially ruining their campaign through injuries.

Hopefully, Portsmouth have potential additions in mind ready to reinforce their squad.
