Portsmouth ‘must prioritise Murphy back-up’ as Mousinho speaks out on injury scare
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has spoken of his desire to sign more midfielders this summer.
Mousinho needs two centre-midfield stars to replace departed loan signings Freddie Potts and Isaac Hayden, but he also wants new recruits on both wings.
That news might surprise Portsmouth fans, given the form of Josh Murphy last season. He provided more assists than any other player in the Championship.
However, the need to sign another left-winger was illustrated clearly when Murphy pulled up with an injury during Pompey’s training camp in Bratislava.

Mousinho provides update on Josh Murphy injury
Murphy was hurt during a 10 v 10 training match in Bratislava, played at full intensity.
It was a worrying moment for the fans who were attending the open training event.
However, Mousinho has confirmed that it was just a minor knock and that Murphy is expected to be available for Pompey’s first pre-season training game on 15 July.
He told The News: “Murph just got a whack on his hip. He was limping around but managed to complete the session.”
Ibane Bowat was also unable to complete this training session, but Mousinho revealed that the defender was withdrawn as a precaution. The knock was nothing to do with the serious injury that kept him out for the entirety of last season.

Portsmouth need a young star to serve as an understudy to Murphy
The nerves surrounding a potential injury for Murphy illustrate the need to recruit a capable understudy. The Blues can’t afford to be too reliant on the former Oxford man during a long Championship season.
As things stand, Murphy will start every important game if he’s fit. There’s no natural replacement for him in the Portsmouth squad. Callum Lang could fill in on the left if needed, but it’s not his best position.
That’s why another left-winger is needed as a priority at Fratton Park.

Italian teenager Patrick Nuamah was one player in that position linked with a move, although those rumours have since been put to bed.
A young player with bags of potential is the type of player most likely to be recruited, given Murphy’s reputation as an automatic starter.
Portsmouth have a strong first XI that will give a good game to any team in the Championship, but strength in depth is needed.
Over the course of a season, players will pick up injuries, and Mousinho will want to be prepared for any possible situation.
