Woking vs Portsmouth: Three things Pompey fans can expect to discover
Portsmouth travel to Woking for the first of their scheduled pre-season fixtures on Tuesday.
This game will give Portsmouth’s squad their first opportunity to regain match fitness ahead of the new Championship season.
It’s also a match that could answer a lot of questions for Pompey fans.
Below, Pompey News explores three things that supporters attending this match can expect to discover.

Where does Mousinho plan to utilise Segecic?
New signing Adrian Segecic was mostly used in the number 10 role just behind the main striker at Sydney FC.
It was mostly from this position that he was able to notch 18 goals for the Australian A-League side last season.
However, Segecic can also play on the right wing, and it has been suggested that Mousinho might try to use him here and play Callum Lang as a number 10.
Segecic is expected to make his Portsmouth debut in this game, so we’ll likely discover where Mousinho plans to use him.

Who is Mousinho’s preferred centre-back pairing?
Portsmouth were going through a defensive injury crisis throughout the back end of last season, with the centre-back pairing changing all the time.
Rob Atkinson was drafted in and did very well, but his loan deal is finished and he now seems unlikely to re-sign.
As such, it’s no longer clear-cut who Mousinho fancies as his first-choice pairing in the centre of defence.
Regan Poole and Conor Shaughnessy might seem like the most obvious choice but Hayden Matthews is highly rated by the Pompey staff too.
Mousinho will want to use his pre-season friendlies to give his first-choice pairing time on the pitch together, so we may get a strong hint about his preference against Woking.
Does Nathan Ferguson deserve a Portsmouth contract?
Nathan Ferguson has been offered a trial at Portsmouth and Mousinho will use these pre-season fixtures to run the rule over him.
Ferguson burst on the scene at West Bromwich Albion, but injury problems have limited him to one senior appearance in the last five seasons.
Seasons | Club | Appearances | Goals |
2017-2020 | West Bromwich Albion | 21 | 1 |
2020-2024 | Crystal Palace | 1 | 0 |
Pompey fans will likely get their first glimpse of Ferguson against Woking, and hopefully he’ll be able to show that he’s ready to perform in the Championship.
