Portsmouth mocked by supporters after John Swift transfer mishap

Portsmouth have officially confirmed the signing of John Swift.

Swift arrives on a free transfer, having previously starred in the Championship for West Brom and Reading.

The 30-year-old was born in Portsmouth and briefly starred for the club’s academy. He becomes John Mousinho’s second signing of the summer after Australian playmaker Adrian Segecic.

Portsmouth fans make the same joke as Swift signing announced

There were some technical errors at Portsmouth as the club prepared to announce Swift’s arrival.

The transfer was seemingly confirmed on the official website earlier in the morning on Tuesday (15 July), although the web page had a 404 error and was eventually deleted.

Portsmouth fans were quick to joke about this when Swift was announced on social media later on in the afternoon, pretending that they hadn’t already seen the announcement several hours before.

The use of Taylor Swift to ‘tease’ the signing before it was officially announced fell flat, mostly because the website had already revealed the transfer. Swift’s announcement is now back on the Portsmouth website, free from errors.

Technical errors aside, the signing should prove to be a coup for Portsmouth. Swift has racked up hundreds of games in the Championship, while Mousinho has also praised the midfielder’s leadership skills.

Portsmouth fans should ignore Baggies’ jibes about Swift

Portsmouth had been linked with Swift for several weeks, but they have finally got their man.

A significant number of West Bromwich Albion fans have taken to social media to criticise their former midfielder. Under posts on X mentioning Swift signing for Pompey, several Baggies fans are calling him lazy or mentioning his lack of work ethic.

Portsmouth fans shouldn’t worry about these comments, though. Frequent X users will remember QPR fans saying the same thing about Andre Dozzell when he signed for Pompey.

Even more inaccurately, Oxford fans were insisting Josh Murphy couldn’t cut it in the Championship.

Mousinho is building an energetic team that presses constantly without the ball. He would have considered whether Swift would fit into his team and should be trusted to recruit well.

It might prove to be a kick in the teeth for Baggies fans when they see Swift running himself into the ground for his hometown club.
