‘West Ham failures serve as Portsmouth blow’ amid Freddie Potts update

Portsmouth are set to receive a blow in their pursuit of Freddie Potts.

In less than a month, Portsmouth’s Championship campaign will get underway with a home encounter against Oxford United (9 August), and as it stands, it will be a very similar side that takes to the pitch at Fratton Park.

Adrian Segecic is the only new arrival at Pompey, though there is still an expectation that more business will be conducted between now and the end of the window.

Potts, after an impressive spell last time out, had been linked with a return to Portsmouth. However, the struggles on show at West Ham have made the chances of a return very evident, with a new Graham Potter decision made.

West Ham to keep hold of Potts amid Fratton Park return talks

Potts recently received a squad number at West Ham, which provided a slight indication as to where his future lies, and it has since been revealed that Potter will be integrating him into the first team at the London Stadium.

That is according to a report shared by the Standard (15 July), which states that George Earthy, who spent time on loan in the Championship last season, will also be given a chance.

Potts was excellent at Portsmouth last season

After an impressive campaign with Portsmouth, it’s not too much of a surprise to see Potter taking a closer look at the midfielder. However, this also likely stems from the failures at West Ham from a recruitment perspective.

The Irons, aside from concluding a permanent deal for Jean-Clair Todibo, have yet to bolster their squad, while having sold one of their best players in Mohammed Kudus to bitter rivals Tottenham.

Portsmouth need to look elsewhere for midfield arrivals

With a deal for Potts now seemingly off the cards, Pompey will have to look elsewhere and pursue other midfield targets.

Nectar Triantis remains an option depending on the progress he can make for Sunderland in pre-season, while there will also certainly be several others on their radar.
