Portsmouth ‘set to sign ex-Tottenham goalkeeper’ after new Mousinho reveal

Portsmouth’s squad is shaping up nicely as they prepare for a new season in the Championship.

The Blues have signed Adrian Segecic and John Swift on free transfers, and a few more signings look close to being completed.

John Mousinho has also brought in a handful of triallists to audition during his side’s pre-season friendlies.

A new triallist played in the victory against Woking on Wednesday (15 July), and he appears to have impressed the Pompey boss.

Alfie Whiteman looks set to join Pompey after impressing on trial

Goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman was on Tottenham’s books for 10 years, but never made a first-team appearance.

He was released by Spurs this summer and has joined Portsmouth on trial with the hope of earning a contract at Fratton Park.

Pompey already have plenty of strength in depth in goal, and recently let young stopper Toby Steward leave on a season-long loan.

However, the way Mousinho spoke to the press about him, it would appear as if he’s nailed on to earn a deal on the South Coast.

He told The News: “One thing we’re keen to do is have four goalkeepers. One reason for that is for squad depth, but it’s also really beneficial for training.

“We have let Toby go out on loan, so rather than having training goalkeepers or ruining an academy session, it’s really important for us to have that squad depth.”

Stuart Moore is another goalkeeper currently on trial with Portsmouth, so it appears it may be a straight shootout between those two for a contract.

Nicolas Schmid, Ben Killip and Jordan Archer are the other three first-team goalkeepers on the books.

Portsmouth need more bodies in midfield

It’s all well and good signing a fourth-choice goalkeeper, but Portsmouth still need new faces in midfield before the Championship season begins.

New man Swift can slot into a deep midfield role, but it would be ideal if Mousinho could bring one or two new stars into the squad.

Pelle Mattsson and Mark Kosznovszky are said to be key targets, but there is competition for their signatures.

Norwich have reportedly been in advanced talks with Mattsson, while Blackburn are believed to be preparing a late bid for Kosznovszky.

Meanwhile, Pompey’s squad could also benefit from a couple of additional wingers. Matt Ritchie looks destined to leave the club, while the Blues are short of cover on the left if Josh Murphy were to become unavailable.

With these extra recruits sealed, Mousinho would surely fancy his chances of improving on last season’s 16th-place finish in the Championship.
