Portsmouth mystery as free agent now named in friendly v Crawley
John Mousinho’s side have been making solid preparations for the next campaign as they continue to push for new signings.
On the pitch, the Blues have also made great strides towards earning more match fitness in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Crawley after it was initially called off due to heavy rain.
It would’ve been a chance for supporters to catch a glimpse of new signings and others who could potentially join them, with one mystery trialist involved.

Former Tottenham keeper Alfie Whiteman plays for Pompey
New signing John Swift was eased back into playing for his boyhood club as he played just over half an hour against Crawley.
Nicolas Schmid, who impressed last season, was replaced by trialist Alfie Whiteman at halftime.
Mousinho’s side have needed more depth this summer, and with young keeper Toby Steward leaving for St Johnstone on loan, Portsmouth need more cover in net.
The former Spurs keeper was rarely called upon in the second half, as he managed to keep Pompey’s goal intact.
Appearances | Goals conceded | Clean sheets |
81 | 156 | 10 |
He was challenged on one occasion when he opted to punch rather than collect, but other than that one Crawley shot that hit the post, he was largely untested.
The 26-year-old has been on the books in North London for ten years and failed to make a competitive appearance for the Lilywhites.
He did have two stints on loan with Swedish side Degerfors in 2021 and 2022.
Elsewhere, Thomas Waddingham returned to the pitch after a successful outing against Woking on Tuesday (15 July).
There was no goal for the Australian as he continued to build up match fitness, but he showed plenty of desire despite having few opportunities in the second half.
Waddingham could be one of those who benefit from a full preseason with the club, after struggling in the latter stages of last season.

Whiteman signing won’t excite Pompey fans
If Portsmouth are to advance on last season’s finish, they need to bolster their squad with more than just a back-up keeper.
While a goalkeeper is needed, Mousinho’s side must first prioritise adding young and talented players to their squad.
Pompey must attempt to replicate the signing of Adrian Segecic a few more times this summer if they are to become a stable Championship club.
