Portsmouth seal John Swift transfer amid ‘huge Championship gap’ – Exclusive

Portsmouth will be striving to make progress on last season, in what is looking like a stacked Championship again.

John Mousinho deserves immense praise for the work he has done at Fratton Park, but he will not want to stop there.

The South Coast club have completed several deals in the transfer market, with John Swift the most reputable Portsmouth acquisition.

Elsewhere, Pompey have signed Australian star Adrian Segecic and look set to be closing in on Mark Kosznovszky, who is ready for a medical.

Portsmouth carry out clever transfer business amid Swift deal

Swift made his Portsmouth pre-season debut against Crawley Town, having joined on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old is a player of substantial experience, having made over 300 Championship appearances.

Football finance expert Dan Plumley – speaking exclusively to Pompey News – has provided insight on the South Coast club’s transfer business.

“It’s a very different market for Portsmouth, isn’t it?” he said.

“They’re in that group of clubs, and we said this. First achievement, stay up, right, that’s done. How can we now grow? But the revenue would have had an uplift.

“It’ll have the same effect this season, so you know where your revenue line’s going to be.

“There’s still a huge gap to the middle of the pack in the Championship, and of course, at the very top with the parachute payments.

“You’ve got Wrexham coming in, being aggressive, Birmingham have been aggressive, so it’s a tricky league this season, and Portsmouth are obviously working within budget constraints, so it was never likely they were going to be able to spend big, and you didn’t expect them to.

“So bringing people in on frees like that, good players at that level, is smart business, and it doesn’t put too much financial strain on the club.”

Pompey primed for Championship return

With the new Championship season just a few weeks away, Mousinho has been running his eye over his Portsmouth squad.

Of course, more incoming would suit Pompey, but they have plenty of time to bring in recruits.

The Fratton Park club trained away from Copnor Road due to facility investment, but have since returned to base, and face Oxford United on the opening day.
