Knibbs in talks with Charlton – Three players Portsmouth could sign instead
Portsmouth will need to find an alternative for Harvey Knibbs as Charlton Athletic close in on his transfer.
Pompey have been on the hunt to add another midfielder to their squad and have identified Knibbs as a prime candidate.
However, the Reading star has also caught the attention of Charlton, who appear to be closing in on a transfer.
As a result, Portsmouth will need to look elsewhere to strengthen their squad this summer.

Josh Brownhill – free agent
As reported by South London Sport Charlton Athletic Edition on Monday (28 July), Charlton are pursuing a deal for Knibbs.
As a result, Portsmouth will need to look for an alternative, and Josh Brownhill could be an attractive option. The midfielder confirmed via X (28 July) that he will be leaving Burnley this summer.
While Brownhill primarily plays as a central midfielder, he is also comfortable in the attack and defence. As such, his versatility could be a huge boost for Pompey in their campaign next season.
Issac Hayden – Newcastle United
Portsmouth have been heavily linked with a move for Newcastle United’s Issac Hayden this summer.
While he has been at the Premier League club since 2019, he has fallen out of favour with the Magpies and is tipped for a return to Pompey after an impressive loan spell during the second half of last season.
Player | League | Appearances | Yellow Cards |
Issac Hayden | Championship | 17 | 2 |
Despite being a defensive midfielder, Hayden is an excellent carrier of the ball and has already demonstrated the qualities he can bring to Fratton Park.
With Knibbs seemingly out of the picture, Portsmouth can now put all their effort into making Hayden’s permanent transfer a reality this summer.

Christian Eriksen – free agent
Another midfielder who could be an option for Portsmouth is Christian Eriksen, who departed Manchester United as a free agent this summer.
The midfielder is said to be prepared for a challenge, and helping Pompey in their Championship goals may be the right one for him.
While his wages could be an issue for the club, the fact that he will sign as a free agent could come as a huge advantage.
With the ability to play as a central, attacking and defensive midfielder, Eriksen possesses the experience and versatility to take Pompey to the next level.
