Portsmouth request pre-season friendly cancellation this week

Portsmouth have had a busy summer to date as they prepare for the WSL2 campaign.

Manager Jay Sadler has made multiple signings to date as he looks to move Pompey away from the relegation zone.

Jemima Dahou became Portsmouth’s latest signing last week as she joined the South Coast club after a spell at Blackburn Rovers.

Now, with the start of the WSL2 just over a month away, Pompey have begun planning their pre-season.

However, they have already had to make changes to their upcoming schedule.

Bournemouth v Portsmouth friendly cancelled

Portsmouth Women had planned to play Bournemouth at Ringwood Community Hub on Wednesday to begin their pre-season campaign.

The WSL2 does not begin until 6 September due to the 2025 European Championships, which have resulted in the delayed summer preparations.

However, it now appears that Sadler’s squad will have to wait even longer to get back out onto the field.

Bournemouth’s official website (29 July) confirmed that Portsmouth had requested to cancel the friendly.

The reason why is not given. However, Portsmouth also put out a message on their official X account confirming the news and stated that more information on their pre-season campaign will follow in due course.

Pompey Women need to get their pre-season sorted

While Portsmouth Women have made some impressive signings so far this summer, the South Coast club must get their act together quickly this pre-season.

Last season, Pompey only finished one point off the bottom two, and this campaign will see the return of two relegation spots.

As a result, it is vital that the players are sharp and ready for a tough test this year, and this starts in pre-season.

Thankfully, it is still over a month until the campaign starts, which should give the South Coast club time to get more friendlies organised.

If not, the Fratton Park outfit may find themselves once again struggling at the start of the season, which could end up costing them a place in the WSL2.
