Thomas Waddingham could leave Portsmouth amid growing fears

Thoms Waddingham joined Portsmouth in the January transfer window.

With Pompey returning to Championship action in just over a week, the next few days are going to paint a clear picture as to how their squad could look.

Portsmouth are still in need of several new additions, and with that could come a handful of exits from Fratton Park.

One of those who could potentially depart is Waddingham, and the Blues would have good reason to sanction his exit.

Waddingham needs regular gametime

Since his arrival in the winter, Waddingham has barely featured for Portsmouth, and when he has, he has managed just one goal.

Ultimately, his arrival was never expected to be one to come and change the fortunes at Fratton Park, with the signing more of one fixated on the future.

However, that future will be bleak if he does not get regular game time, and with Colby Bishop ahead of him, it seems unlikely that he will get minutes in the Championship.

For all parties, it may make sense to sanction a loan move elsewhere in the EFL, though it would then leave Pompey in need of a striker arrival.

There will be fears that Waddingham’s development could be negatively impacted if he isn’t playing regularly, and this must be a thought ahead of any decision.

Do Portsmouth need a new striker?

If Bishop were to get injured, the question would be, where would Pompey’s goals come from?

Josh Murphy will inevitably contribute, though outside of him, Portsmouth would be left without a reliable source of goals, and that is with or without Waddingham.

Signing an experienced striker would provide Portsmouth with a huge boost, though it must be the right deal for it to be pursued.

That isn’t the only area of the squad which could do with some more quality, and those at Fratton Park will be well aware of the task that awaits them with the transfer window closing on 1 September.
