Nathan Ferguson transfer makes total sense as Portsmouth seek last-minute recruits
Portsmouth are still looking to add some last-minute recruits before the start of the Championship season.
John Mousinho has signed five new players this summer, but has admitted he’d like to add at least five more before the transfer window closes.
Mousinho is likely to have learned from the defensive injury crisis that threatened to derail Pompey’s season last January.
Some extra signings would help him avoid a similar scenario, although there may not be much money left for him to spend this summer.

Ferguson transfer would make complete sense for Portsmouth
Former Crystal Palace defender Nathan Ferguson has been on trial at Fratton Park for the last four weeks.
The 24-year-old is hoping to get his career back on track at Portsmouth after injury problems limited him to one senior appearance in the last five years.
It’s believed that Mousinho will make a decision on Ferguson in the coming days now that there are no more friendlies left to play, and it would make complete sense to offer him a contract.

There would be no transfer fee involved to sign Ferguson. It’s likely that Ferguson would accept a one-year deal as one of Portsmouth’s lowest-paid players. It has even been suggested that he might be offered a pay-as-you-play deal at Fratton Park.
This would at least allow him to prove he can remain fit and perform well at Championship level. Given his recent injury problems, he’d be lucky to find a better deal anywhere else.
Provided that he accepts a deal on these terms, there would be no reason for Mousinho not to take a punt on him.
Portsmouth need reinforcements in attack
Portsmouth are well stacked in defence, so it wouldn’t make sense to spend much more of the budget here. A cheap deal for Ferguson would be an economical way to boost the squad numbers, and his ability to play across the back four makes it an even smarter move.
From there, Mousinho will surely be focusing on adding reinforcements in attack.
Portsmouth desperately need:
- A right winger to compete with Callum Lang
- A left winger to challenge Josh Murphy
- A back-up striker or two
The Blues have plenty of options in centre-midfield now that they’ve signed John Swift, Mark Kosznovszky and Luke Le Roux. The goalkeeper situation is healthy.
If Mousinho can expand the squad with some quality players in attacking positions, he’ll feel confident in Portsmouth’s ability to improve on last season’s 16th-place finish in the Championship.
Pompey travel to Oxford for their first league game of the season on 9 August.
