West Ham legend starting to realise what every Portsmouth fan knew about Potts
Freddie Potts has returned to West Ham United after his loan spell at Portsmouth.
Potts, 21, shined during his time on the south coast, making 37 appearances as Pompey survived their first season back in the Championship.
The defensive midfielder has been a part of West Ham’s squad for their Premier League Summer Series tour, as the Hammers finished runners-up.
The Englishman started two of the three games in America, against Everton and Bournemouth respectively, whilst coming off the bench against Manchester United in the opener, and has stood out to a Hammers legend.

Martin Allen puts spotlight on Potts after West Ham victory
West Ham legend Martin Allen has praised Potts’ performance against Bournemouth in the final game of the Premier League Summer Series in America.
The East Londoners beat the Cherries 2-0 in Atlanta thanks to goals from Niclas Fullkrug and Jarrod Bowen, which followed their 2-1 victory against Everton days earlier.
The midfielder brought energy and control to the game in Graham Potter’s midfield against a strong opponent in Andoni Iraola’s side, which is similar to what he was doing at Fratton Park.
Allen said on X (3 August): “Freddie Potts, too. What a good performance from him. Good energy, good strong, tenacious, pacy player.”
Portsmouth need to replace Potts
The midfielder became a revelation at Portsmouth, but now John Mousinho has a task on his hands to replace him.
The 21-year-old’s departure has left a hole in the Pompey midfield, and two men have been signed that could potentially take his place.
Mousinho’s side signed Mark Kosznovszky and Luke Le Roux to help plug that hole, and the South African is more suited to replace the West Ham man.
Freddie Potts 2024/25 stats | Total |
Appearances | 38 |
Tackles per 90 | 1.7 |
Interceptions per 90 | 1.1 |
If Le Roux can provide the defensive solidity that Potts was able to provide last season, then Pompey have found a permanent solution to their midfield worries.
