Portsmouth ‘could now produce Wrexham-inspired documentary’ after Eisner reveal

Portsmouth are planning to produce a behind-the-scenes documentary over the coming year.

The format is tried and tested, with other series such as Netflix’s Sunderland Til I Die and Amazon’s All or Nothing, which followed Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham over three different seasons, proving hugely popular.

Club owner Michael Eisner announced the plans in May, after previously dismissing the idea following his takeover of Portsmouth in 2017.

Pompey face their second season since promotion to the Championship this year, and will hope to climb the league from last campaign’s 16th-placed finish.

Eisner to follow in foot footsteps of Ryan Reynolds

Portsmouth have grown exponentially off the pitch as well as on it, since Eisner’s takeover in 2017.

The Blues now have the strongest financial structure in their 127-year history, according to Forbes (5 August), and are set to continue to work towards their Premier League aims this season.

One of the clubs Pompey will face in the Championship, Wrexham, share some similarities in their own story.

The Welsh club were taken over in 2021 by celebrity duo Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

At the time, the Red Dragons were playing in the National League, but the years since have seen an incredible rise up the football pyramid.

The following season saw Wrexham win the league, earning promotion to League Two, where they would finish second immediately to move up to League One.

And last season, the third tier proved no match for Phil Parkinson’s side, with automatic promotion secured for the third consecutive season.

Eisner’s investment in British football came before McElhenney and Reynolds, but the American would now like to follow their lead in producing a behind-the-scenes documentary.

Smash-hit docuseries Welcome to Wrexham concluded its fourth season this summer and has attracted thousands of new fans to the Welsh club from overseas.

And Eisner would like to oversee a similar effect at Portsmouth, with six cameras due to follow the team and its leadership for the 2025/26 season.

Eisner’s plans could have massive benefits for Portsmouth

Football docuseries exploded into life following Netflix’s Sunderland Til I Die, which was released in 2018.

The series captured the turmoil of a struggling ownership system and its damaging ramifications at the Stadium of Light, often focusing on the impact the team’s plight had on the locals.

While Portsmouth fans would expect to see a very different story, a series could well attract new eyes to the Blues and ultimately prove hugely beneficial.
