Remarkable stat will fill Portsmouth fans with confidence of win v Oxford United
Portsmouth open their Championship campaign against Oxford United on Saturday.
Pompey travel to Kassam Stadium (9 August) looking to start their season on a positive note after a mixed bag of results in pre-season.
John Mousinho’s side secured survival in their first season back in the second tier last season, five points ahead of the relegation zone.
The Fratton Park outfit will be hoping to at the very least consolidate their position, if they cannot push up the table.

Portsmouth have immense record v Oxford United
Portsmouth have a great record against the U’s recently, so supporters will take a great deal of confidence into Saturday’s clash.
The Blues have only lost one of their last 10 against the Yellows since the 1-1 draw, which eliminated them from the League One play-offs in July 2020.
The PO4 outfit have drawn five and won four after that, with the only loss coming on the road in February 2022.

Jan 2024 | Oxford United | Kassam Stadium | 2-2 |

Mousinho cannot rely on past form
It is obviously a positive that Pompey seem to have Oxford’s number in recent years, but they cannot rely solely on that record in the upcoming contest.
Mousinho needs the likes of Mark Kosznovsky and John Swift to step up as they make their first appearances for Pompey in the division after signing this summer.
Australian winger and fellow new addition Adrian Segecic has impressed in pre-season, and he will hope to continue that form in the opener and help his side get off to the perfect start.
The visitors got the better of Gary Rowett’s side when they met last time out in February 2025, with a 2-0 victory, and they would be satisfied with a repeat of that result.
- Portsmouth have scored 16 in their last 10 against Oxford
- They have conceded 12 in their last 10 against Oxford.
If Pompey are to push on and establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the second tier and potential promotion candidates in the future, they need to be beating this kind of opposition and making a statement while doing so.
If Mousinho and Co can record a big win, it could set them up for a really good campaign where they potentially exceed expectations.
