Mike Dean reacts to late Connor Ogilvie controversy in Portsmouth v Norwich City
Mike Dean has given a strong opinion on the late Connor Ogilvie controversy during Portsmouth’s 1-2 defeat to Norwich City.
John Mousinho will be gutted with Portsmouth’s performance in their second matchday of the Championship season. This comes after Pompey secured a 1-0 victory against Oxford United last week.
Nowrich put two past Nicolas Schmid’s goal within the first 20 minutes of the action. While Adrian Segecic pulled one back, it was too little too late for the home side.
However, the game was not without its controversial spells, and Dean has reacted to the latest one.

Dean reacts to Connor Ogilvie booking
Connor Ogilvie has come under fire at Portsmouth for his mistakes in previous Championship games.
The defender is normally consistent at the back for Pompey, but he does have his moments.
- Ogilvie made 45 appearances for Portsmouth during the 2024/25 season
The game against Norwich became heated towards the end of the game. Pompey were desperate to secure a last-minute equaliser from Sergecic’s corner.
Ogilvie believed he had been fouled in the box, and it looked like he may have had a case. However, the defender ended up going into the book and play continued.
After the game, when discussing a potential simulation, Dean said on Soccer Saturday: “I’ve had a third look, it’s not a penalty. He left his foot in there, but there’s no contact made by the Norwich player. The guy’s just stepped over his foot.
“There’s no contact. He’s just stepped over and just fell down for me. Good decision by the referee, Steve Martin.”

What must Portsmouth improve for the next game?
Portsmouth’s defeat against Norwich revealed several issues that Mousinho will need to address.
Defensive improvements is a given. However, Colby Bishop’s miss from the penalty spot with 10 minutes left to go in the game. As a result, this will be an area which Mousinho will focus on during training.
But the biggest takeaway from the game would be to keep their compactness throughout. Even after the two goals conceded, there were times when Norwich were able to exploit the space left behind. This could prove disastrous for the rest of the Championship season if left unchecked.
Therefore, there are several things that Mousinho must work on to give Pompey the best chances of success this season.
