Portsmouth fans all say the same thing after Wigan delight over Christian Saydee

Portsmouth made the hard decision to sell Christian Saydee to Wigan Athletic this summer after spending two seasons in blue.

Saydee left alongside Kusini Yengi at Fratton Park, with John Mousinho eyeing a new look up front.

However, Pompey are yet to recruit a new striker this summer, and have relied on Thomas Waddingham and Colby Bishop.

Portsmouth showed in the 2-1 loss to Norwich last time out that they need someone to take the pressure off Bishop in the final third.

Wigan fans question why Portsmouth sold Saydee

Saydee’s form on the south coast was turbulent.

He never quite reached the heights that Bishop has, and selling him this summer seemed like a smart decision.

In doing so, the Blues have managed to bring in Luke Le Roux and Mark Kosznovszky on £1million deals and have also secured smart additions elsewhere.

However, Saydee’s form with Wigan has made supporters question why the striker was sold.

Stephen Dawson, a Wigan fan, wrote on X, “Genuine question for Pompey, why have you sold Saydee to us? He’s a brilliant footballer.”

One Blues fan replied: “He was down the pecking order, and wanted first team football, that us and no other championship club was offering, not saying he couldn’t hack it in the championship in the future, but he needs minutes on the pitch to progress.”

Saydee never quite found his goalscoring boots at Fratton Park, but became known for his brute strength up top and for causing defenders hassle.

Selling Saydee was a big mistake by Portsmouth

Supporters have seen this summer just how difficult it is to find a striker capable of causing consistent problems in the Championship.

Mousinho has himself admitted that any move for a new forward will likely come later in the window when Premier League loans are more readily available.

Saydee was a useful option at this level to bring off the bench and cause some problems.

Pompey may come to regret offloading Saydee so soon and maybe should have either kept him as a rotation player or loaned him out.

Portsmouth supporters saw in the 2-1 loss to Norwich how much more useful it would’ve been to have a goal threat on the pitch in the dying minutes of the game.

Saydee’s physicality would have caused all sorts of problems for the Canaries’ defence, but it shared a big message that it was a League One move for him, in the end.
