Portsmouth’s chances of beating West Brom revealed by supercomputer
Portsmouth head to West Brom for their third Championship game of the season on Saturday.
John Mousinho‘s side got off to the perfect start in the second tier against Oxford, with Pompey sealing a hard-fought 1-0 win.
However, Portsmouth were poor in their game against Norwich, as they lost 2-1 with two set-piece goals conceded early on at Fratton Park.
The Blues will be looking to get back to winning ways against West Brom on 23 August, but they have a lot going against them at The Hawthorns.

Portsmouth have just a 25.5 per cent chance of beating West Brom
The Baggies got the better of Portsmouth last season, with West Brom smashing Mousinho’s side 5-1 in the Black Country.
Mousinho’s side also failed to make use of home advantage, as Portsmouth lost 3-0 in the fifth gameweek of last season.
The Blues will be hoping to put their season back on track after last weekend’s defeat, but it is predicted that they will struggle to do so against Saturday’s opponents.
According to Opta’s supercomputer, Pompey have just a 25.5 per cent chance of winning the game.
It also predicts that the hosts have a 48.8 per cent chance of winning, with a 25.7 per cent chance of a draw.
Portsmouth’s defeat to Norwich exposed gaps in their squad and showed that work still needs to be done in the transfer window.
The defence was too weak, as they were outbattled in the air, and Colby Bishop’s missed penalty will be a concern that he has lost his shooting boots.
In contrast, West Brom are going into the game in fine form, having won both of their opening games, with a 1-0 victory over Blackburn and a 3-2 win at Wrexham.

Portsmouth look nailed on to lose to West Brom
All things point to a Portsmouth defeat this weekend.
Things aren’t very positive at Fratton Park following their disappointing showing against Norwich last weekend.
- Pompey have won just 18 of their 75 games vs West Brom
- The Baggies have managed 145 goals across those games compared to Portsmouth’s 93
Portsmouth haven’t beaten West Brom in their last four games, stretching back to when they were in the top-flight together in 2008/09.
Against a strong opponent in the Baggies, they will likely struggle to get back to winning ways.
