Portsmouth must put awful record vs Preston behind them to continue strong start
Portsmouth host Preston on Saturday as they look to enter the first international break with a positive result in the Championship.
John Mousinho got back on track with Portsmouth’s 1-1 draw at West Brom and is looking to continue the decent start at Fratton Park.
One eye will be on the game and the other on the transfer state of play for Pompey fans, with deadline day around the corner on 1 September.
If Portsmouth are going to put themselves into the best position possible going into the final stages of the window, they must sort out their form against North End.

Portsmouth have won four of their last 14 vs Preston North End
In the most recent fixture between Portsmouth and the Lilywhites, Preston were 2-1 winners in Lancashire.
In the reverse fixture, Portsmouth won their first game in their last five against their opponents, with a Pompey 3-1 win at Fratton Park.
Mousinho will be hoping to replicate that result, but their form against Preston doesn’t bode well.
Pompey have won just three of their last 14 games against Preston, stretching back to the 2000/01 season.
Portsmouth | Team | Preston |
3 | Wins | 6 |
5 | Draws | 5 |
11 | Goals scored | 14 |
The fixture has yielded just 25 goals in the last 14 games, with just three games seeing more than two goals scored.
Therefore, supporters won’t be expecting a goalfest.
Preston have won two of their opening three games so far, and sit on seven points compared to Pompey’s four.

Which positions could Portsmouth target before the transfer deadline?
Transfer Deadline Day is right around the corner, and Pompey supporters still feel more business needs to be completed.
Striker is an obvious position of concern after Callum Lang was sidelined for a possible 12 weeks, with Colby Bishop also not without his injury worries.
A Premier League loan could be on the cards, with Mousinho admitting earlier in the summer that they would have to wait and see what becomes available.
Portsmouth could still look to add experience to the side after Matt Ritchie’s move to Reading was announced, with plenty more expected.
