Jeff Stelling forced to say Portsmouth sealed ‘biggest signing on deadline day’ with one major deal
Portsmouth no doubt had a busy deadline day, with four new additions coming through the door.
John Mousinho will no doubt be pleased with his business, with Pompey’s squad once again having a serious upgrade.
There will be hope that the South Coast club can continue their rise up the table after Portsmouth’s 1-0 victory over Preston last weekend saw Pompey rise to eighth in the Championship.
Now, Jeff Stelling has weighed in on Portsmouth business in what was no doubt a successful deadline day.

‘Conor Chaplin is the biggest deadline day signing’
Conor Chaplin made his move to Portsmouth on deadline day, returning to Pompey after leaving in 2019.
The attacker had come through Portsmouth’s academy and had played over 100 times for the South Coast club, helping them win the League Two title.
Now, Chaplin has returned to Fratton Park on loan from Ipswich Town, in what is no doubt a top signing.
- Chaplin has spent most of his career at Ipswich after leaving Portsmouth
- The 28-year-old was part of the squad that won promotion to the Premier League
- Chaplin has netted 55 goals for Ipswich in 174 matches
As a result, this move has caught the attention of multiple news outlets, including talkSPORT on 2 September.
Speaking on their breakfast show, Stelling spoke about the addition of the attacker.
He said: “There were some big deals on deadline day, not forgetting Conor Chaplin returning to Portsmouth.
“The biggest signing on deadline day it says here.
“He’s back at the club where it all started off for him.”
Conor Chaplin set for second Portsmouth debut vs Southampton
Unfortunately, with the international break now underway, Portsmouth fans will have to wait around two weeks to see Chaplin back in a Pompey shirt.
However, with Southampton versus Portsmouth being the first match back, the attacker has a chance to make himself an instant hero once again.
Pompey haven’t beaten the Saints in the league since 2005 and stand a great chance of ending this on 14 September.
Therefore, if Chaplin were to net the winner in the derby, it would no doubt be a dream come true.
