Peter Crouch laughs at Newcastle transfer development that brings back Portsmouth memories

Portsmouth have had an incredibly busy transfer window, making 12 signings as they look to establish themselves in the Championship.

New Portsmouth arrival Adrian Segecic has started the season well, having scored two goals in his first four games for the club.

John Swift is a smart acquisition in midfield for Portsmouth, whilst Conor Chaplin’s return to Fratton Park is an exciting move for the fans.

John Mousinho’s side have started the season well, sitting in eighth place after four matches.

It’s been a rollercoaster transfer season for most clubs in England, with Newcastle United’s window coming to life in the final week of the window.

Newcastle sign Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade

Having sold Alexander Isak to Liverpool, Newcastle spent big to replace the Sweden star with Wissa and Woltemade arriving late in the transfer window.

Former Pompey striker Peter Crouch reacted to a post comparing Newcastle’s two new signings to his strike partnership with Jermain Defoe at Portsmouth, posting three laughing face emojis.

Crouch stands tall at 6ft 7in, whilst Defoe is 5ft 7in, and their partnership in the 2008/09 season was devastating for opposition defences.

Newcastle will be hoping that their new forwards can link up in the same manner, as the Magpies have failed to win any of their opening three Premier League games.

The Alexander Isak saga has undoubtedly unsettled Newcastle’s start to the season, but now they’ll hope they can put it behind them.

Woltemade and Wissa will play a big role for Newcastle this season, but will they have the effect that Crouch and Defoe did at Portsmouth?

Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe a striker partnership for the ages

In 2008/29, Pompey were still going strong in the Premier League, having just come off the back of an extraordinary FA Cup win.

With Crouch playing at Portsmouth for the whole of that season, and Defoe playing at the club from February 2008 – January 2009, their partnership together only last for four months.

However, they were brilliant together, feeding off their individual strengths to cause huge problems for opposition defences.

With unique strike partnerships a rarity in modern football, I’m sure Pompey fans would do anything to have this partnership back.
