Supercomputer predicts Portsmouth chances of promotion after deadline day flurry

Portsmouth have no doubt had a successful transfer window, with John Mousinho making some key upgrades to his squad.

The addition of players such as Conor Chaplin at Fratton Park could prove to be massive throughout the season.

While Mousinho has also made controversial decisions, such as allowing Matt Ritchie to leave Portsmouth, Pompey are no doubt in a better position than at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

As a result, with the window now closed for everyone in the Championship, predictions are now starting to fly out about how the table will look at the end of the season.

Portsmouth backed for mid-table Championship finish

Portsmouth will no doubt be looking to build on their 16th-place finish in the Championship last season.

The South Coast club were fighting relegation for the majority of the campaign before a surge in form eventually saw them survive comfortably.

As a result, Opta on 2 September is backing Pompey to finish 14th in the Championship this season, an improvement on last campaign.

The supercomputer believes that Portsmouth will finish on around 63 points, but insists that they have an outside shot of promotion.

Reaching the Premier League via the playoffs is seen as a 15.52 per cent chance, while the odds of finishing second stand at five per cent.

There also remains a small chance Pompey could win the title, standing at 1.98 per cent.

In comparison, the chance of relegation stands at 9.46 per cent.

Portsmouth have a serious chance of reaching the playoffs

This campaign, there is a serious chance that Portsmouth will challenge for a place in the playoffs.

Pompey were one of the most inform teams in the division in the latter half of the 2024/25 season, and it was only their awful start that prevented them from finishing higher.

Given that Mousinho has now seriously upgraded his squad, there is every chance that Portsmouth can reach the playoffs.

This has already been evident this campaign, with the South Coast club currently sitting eighth in the table.

Hopefully, when Portsmouth play Southampton in the South Coast derby after the international break they will pick up all three points to prove that they are promotion contenders.
