Portsmouth have struck gold with Nicolas Schmid as impressive reveal emerges
Nicolas Schmid has been a solid presence in goal for Portsmouth since he moved to Fratton Park last summer.
The 28-year-old has since established himself as Pompey’s number one after joining from Austrian club BW Linz.
Scmid was consistently praised at Portsmouth last season by both his teammates and John Mousinho alike after numerous stunning performances helped keep the South Coast club in the Championship.
Now, the keeper has seemingly continued his form in the 2025/26 campaign.

Nicolas Schmid has the highest goal prevention in the Championship so far
The goalkeeper’s early-season form at Portsmouth has already been apparent.
Schmid was excellent in Portsmouth’s 1-0 victory over Oxford United, ensuring that they had a great start to their campaign.
Since then, the keeper has kept another clean sheet against Preston, to help Pompey rise to eighth in the Championship table.
- Schmid was signed by Portsmouth last summer
- The goalkeeper has since played 40 times for Pompey
- Last season, Schmid kept eight Championship clean sheets
Now, according to Fotmob on 4 September, Schmid has prevented 2.8 goals already this campaign, the highest in the Championship by some distance.
Leicester City’s Jakub Stolarczyk is next at 1.8, while Bristol City’s Radek Vitek follows at 1.3.

Josef Bursik faces battle for game time at Portsmouth
Among Portsmouth’s deadline day signings was Josef Bursik.
The goalkeeper joined Pompey from Club Brugge after previously playing in England for Stoke City.
However, the 25-year-old may face a real battle for game time given the form of Schmid.

Appearances | 52 |
Goals conceded | 69 |
Clean sheets | 19 |
With Portsmouth also out of the Carabao Cup, it could mean that only an injury or a stark decline in form from Schmid will see Bursik make his debut before Christmas.
However, Mousinho is likely to have a plan for the keeper as Portsmouth look to build on their success from the previous campaign.
For now, Schmid is easily the number one at Fratton Park.
