Conor Chaplin made a late, sensational switch to Portsmouth on deadline day.

The attacking midfielder came through Pompey’s academy, playing over 100 matches, before departing in 2019.

Now, Portsmouth have re-signed Chaplin on loan from Ipswich Town, with his addition no doubt a coup for John Mousinho

With Pompey fans will have to wait until the international break ends to see the 28-year-old back out on the pitch, the attacking midfielder has taken the time to discuss his late move.

Conor Chaplin: I’m counting down the days to play at Fratton Park

After the break, Pompey have a set of exciting fixtures on the horizon.

Portsmouth are set to take on Southampton in the first game back as they look to finally get a victory in the South Coast derby.

Following this, Pompey will return to Fratton Park to take on the Owls.

While many Sheffield Wednesday fans are not excited for the match at Fratton Park, Chaplin is “counting down the days” until the match.

  • Chaplin came through Portsmouth’s academy and went on to play over 100 times for the first-team
  • The attacking midfielder left Fratton Park in 2019 for Coventry
  • Chaplin has now returned to Portsmouth on a season-long loan from Ipswich Town

Speaking to Portsmouth’s official website on 4 September, Chaplin spoke about his impending return to the stadium as a Pompey player.

“I can’t wait, I’m really excited,” he said. “It will be a nice moment for me and my family, definitely. It’ll be a full circle.

“I can’t wait. It’ll be maybe a couple of weeks away now, so I’ll be counting down the days and it’ll be a nice moment.”

Conor Chaplin’s record vs Sheffield Wednesday

With Chaplin likely to play a role in the match against the Owls, the attacking midfielder will be hoping for a goal-scoring return to Fratton Park.

However, across his career, Chaplin has struggled to beat Wednesday, only winning twice in nine matches, losing three.

On the goalscoring front, he has netted twice, including a winner for Ipswich in their 1-0 victory in the 2023/24 campaign.

With this being the last time Chaplin faced the Owls, hopefully, he will be able to replicate this performance on 20 September.
