How much Portsmouth are set to lose after Jordan Archer snub

Portsmouth have often been careful with their finances since their crisis in the early 2010s.

This has been seen throughout John Mousinho’s reign at Fratton Park, with the manager not afraid to let players leave.

In the summer, several big names departed Portsmouth, including Matt Ritchie, in what was a controversial decision.

Another slightly puzzling decision was to allow Jordan Archer to remain at Fratton Park, despite his depleted game time.

Portsmouth to lose at least £120k on Jordan Archer

Archer had been given a chance to leave Portsmouth in the transfer window, but despite the window now being closed, the goalkeeper remains at the South Coast club.

This is despite the 32-year-old being fourth choice under Mousinho, with multiple new signings seeing him fall down the pecking order.

Now, it has been confirmed that Archer is not in Portsmouth’s Championship squad, meaning he will have to wait at least until January to play another match for Pompey.

While this decision may seem logical to many of the Fratton Park faithful, it is not set to cost Pompey thousands.

According to Capology as of 11 September, the keeper is currently earning £7,500-a-week.

Therefore, even if Portsmouth sell him on 1 January, he will still earn another £120,000 without playing a single match.

If Archer chooses to remain at the South Coast club after the winter window, he will make a total of £315,000, with his contract set to expire in the summer.

This is also without including potential bonuses and clauses in his contract that could see him earn even more.

While Mousinho could choose to register him in January, this seems unlikely given his current position in the pecking order.

John Mousinho has to be more ruthless with his squad

If Mousinho wants to see Portsmouth progress further, he has to be ruthless with his squad.

Players like Archer, who simply have no place in the squad, must simply be sold, especially when there is no need to have a fourth-choice keeper.

Mousinho already cancelled the contract of Abdoulaye Kamara on deadline day, and the manager may look to go a similar route with Archer.

Hopefully, whatever the manager decides, a solution will be found that benefits all parties.
