Portsmouth player to regret summer transfer decision after being left out of squad until 2026
John Mousinho has overseen a squad overhaul this summer at Portsmouth, with numerous players coming and going.
On deadline day alone, four players came into Fratton Park, while two departed either on loan or permanently.
So far, Mousinho’s changes have yielded results, with Portsmouth’s 1-0 victory over Preston sending them up to eighth in the Championship table.
However, many of these additions have not been great for everyone in the squad.
Jordan Archer left out of Portsmouth’s Championship squad
The squad lists for the Championship season have now been released ahead of the first match after the transfer window.
While there were few surprises, one notable absentee was Jordan Archer.
The goalkeeper joined Portsmouth last year, but has made few appearances, with Nicolas Schmid often preferred.
Now, with the addition of Josef Bursik at Fratton Park, as well as Ben Killip earlier in 2025, Archer now finds himself fourth choice.

Mousinho was willing to let Archer leave Portsmouth in the transfer window, and now, the 32-year-old will surely be regretting his decision to stay.
The goalkeeper will not play another match until at least January, once the registration window opens once again.
Therefore, Archer will be wasting months of his career, not even making it onto the bench.

Mousinho is not completely innocent in how this has played out either.
The goalkeeper is now set to earn thousands for months despite not playing a minute of action.
If the manager knew that Archer was not in his plans, then Mousinho should have pushed for an exit before deadline day.
Now, Pompey will not only have to pay his wages but will also likely miss out on a potential fee, with the goalkeeper’s contract expiring next summer.
