Portsmouth suffered ‘major blow’ in Southampton clash as new problem emerges
Portsmouth’s 0-0 draw against Southampton had plenty of positives to take from the performance.
The visitors were arguably the better team, with Andre Dozzell running the show against Southampton.
In the end, Pompey were perhaps unlucky not to get the win, with John Mousinho’s side producing numerous chances that should have been put away.
However, there were also negatives to the match, which could have a big impact on Portsmouth’s season.

Ben Killip fails to perform after Nicolas Schmid injury
Nicolas Schmid has been one of Portsmouth’s best players so far this campaign.
The goalkeeper has proved to be ever-reliable in between the sticks and has saved Pompey numerous times.
Therefore, when Schmid was forced off against Southampton, Andy Hinchcliffe told Sky Sports on 14 September said, “Schmid going off is a major blow.”
- Schmid joined Portsmouth in 2024
- The goalkeeper quickly established himself as Pompey’s number one
- Schmid was forced off with an injury against Southampton
This injury almost proved to be costly for Pompey, with oncoming goalkeeper Ben Killip looking nervy throughout.
Killip kicked numerous balls out of play and almost made a costly mistake in the second half, but Southampton weren’t able to find the killer blow.
Therefore, if Schmid is out long-term, it could be a major problem for Mousinho, with the 29-year-old not up to standard against the Saints.

Josef Bursik to be handed early Portsmouth debut?
When Josef Bursik came through the door at Portsmouth on deadline day, he likely thought he wouldn’t play until at least the FA Cup third round.
However, the former Stoke City goalkeeper now has a real chance to make his first Pompey appearance against Wednesday next weekend.
Given the performance of Killip and Schmid’s injury, Mousinho has to seriously consider bringing in Bursik on Saturday.
Against Wednesday, it would be the perfect match to get the keeper up to speed against a struggling side.
