Will Still ‘didn’t understand’ one thing John Mousinho did after Southampton vs Portsmouth

Portsmouth were unable to pick up a win in the South Coast derby as they drew 0-0 with Southampton on Sunday.

The match had few moments of quality on the field, with Andre Dozzell’s long-ranged effort hitting the bar, the closest Portsmouth came to breaking the deadlock in a tight match at St. Mary’s Stadium.

On top of this, Nicolas Schmid picked up an injury for Portsmouth in what is no doubt a concern for John Mousinho.

However, away from the pitch, there was plenty of action, with Southampton Will Still questioning what Mousinho did.

Will Still on John Mousinho handshake: I didn’t get it

Throughout Portsmouth’s goalless draw against Southampton, there were plenty of chaotic scenes off the pitch.

In the first half, the match was brought to a halt when a Southampton fan ran onto the field, only to be escorted away by stewards.

On top of this, Still and Mousinho appeared to have a heated end to the match when both went to shake hands at full-time.

The Pompey manager had hold of Still’s hand as he walked away, which appeared to annoy the Saints boss.

When talking about the incident at full-time, Still admitted he was confused by the entire incident.

He told the Daily Echo on 14 September: “Yeah, I didn’t quite get that. Well, it’s just a derby, it’s football, isn’t it?

“I don’t mind it, but I didn’t and don’t understand why he grabbed hold of my hand, but fair play, he came with a game plan and did what they wanted to do.”

John Mousinho won the battle at St. Mary’s

Going into the match, Southampton were undoubtedly the favourites despite their poor start to the 2025/26 campaign.

Yet, Portsmouth were the better team throughout and were unlucky not to come away with the win at full-time.

Tactically, Mousinho was spot on and was only inches away from coming away with a famous three points.

Hopefully, the Pompey manager can now use this experience to go and win the reverse fixture at Fratton Park later in the season.
