John Swift at risk of Portsmouth suspension after incident vs Southampton

John Swift has been a solid Portsmouth addition since his arrival in the summer from West Brom.

The midfielder joined Fratton Park on a free transfer and has since started in every Championship match for the South Coast side.

As a result, Swift has shone at Portsmouth, and has managed to form a formidable partnership with Andre Dozzell.

However, the 30-year-old could now find himself out of the side, with the midfielder at risk of a suspension.

John Swift just one yellow card away from Portsmouth suspension

While Portsmouth’s 0-0 draw with Southampton had few entertaining qualities, there were plenty of moments that could have long-term consequences on Pompey’s season.

Nicolas Schmid and Connor Ogilvie face time on the Portsmouth sidelines due to a collusion between the pair in the first half.

On top of this, John Mousinho faces a potential suspension at Fratton Park due to his outburst concerning Tom Fellows.

However, one incident that may have gone under the radar is that of Swift.

The midfielder picked up his fourth booking of the Championship season against the Saints, meaning he is now only one off a suspension.

When does the Championship’s yellow card rule reset?

As stated above, when a player in the Championship is booked five times, they receive a one-match suspension.

However, there is a cut-off for this, with it only being applicable for the first 19 matches of the season.

Therefore, if Swift avoids another yellow card between now and game week 19, he will avoid the suspension and be able to be booked again.

However, this could prove to be a tricky task for the former Baggies man, and he will now have to potentially play 14 matches without being carded, after picking up four in his last five Championship matches.
