Sheffield Wednesday could do something vs Portsmouth they’ve never done before

Portsmouth welcome Sheffield Wednesday to Fratton Park on Saturday, with the two teams facing off in unusual circumstances.

It’s rare that the Blues have been such strong contenders to beat Wednesday, but that will be the case when the two sides lock horns this time.

Portsmouth are heavy favourites to beat Sheffield Wednesday, mostly due to the Owls’ financial woes stripping its first team to its bare bones.

Of course, there are rarely any easy games in the Championship, and John Mousinho will still need to get his team firing on all cylinders.

The Owls have only one point from their first five games, but if they were to pick up a win, they would achieve something for the first time in the club’s history.

Sheffield Wednesday looking to achieve new record against Portsmouth

Sheffield Wednesday have won on their last two visits to Fratton Park.

They beat Portsmouth 2-1 in the Championship last October, while they picked up a 1-0 victory in League One in March 2023.

If they were to take three points on Saturday, that would make it three wins in a row at Portsmouth, which the Owls have never achieved before.

Perhaps more importantly, it would be Wednesday’s first win of the 2025/26 season.

Pompey, of course, will be doing all they can to grab a morale-boosting victory of their own to build on the hard-fought 0-0 draw against Southampton last weekend.

John Mousinho will demand consistency against Sheffield Wednesday

Portsmouth have arguably reached a new level of quality and class in the Championship this season.

Barring two defensive lapses from Portsmouth against Norwich, Pompey have been mostly superb.

Both defensively and on the ball, they look like an established Championship side and the league table is communicating the same thing.

It could be a new challenge against Sheffield Wednesday though. They are such heavy favourites that there is a risk of complacency kicking in. Or perhaps frustration could take over if the Blues don’t take a lead early in this match.

It will be Mousinho’s job to ensure that his team is mentally prepared to stop either of these scenarios from harming their performance.
