Adrian Segecic urged to make small tweak to his game by Portsmouth expert

Adrian Segecic started his Portsmouth career like a house on fire, but has been quieter since being shifted out to the right wing.

Since Conor Chaplin joined Portsmouth on loan, he has been the preferred choice in the number 10 role, leaving Segecic to try and make an impact in a less familiar role.

It hasn’t been easy for the Australian. He was substituted in the second half in the goalless draw against Southampton and Pompey’s 2-0 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.

Now, the summer signing has been offered some advice by a Portsmouth expert.

Andrew Moon urges Adrian Segecic to mix up his wing play

Pompey have a host of players who want to play in the central playmaker role. When Segecic signed for Portsmouth, it looked he like he’d be the preferred option for that position.

However, Chaplin now appears to be the first choice, so the former Sydney FC star will need to improve his wing play if he wants to remain in the starting XI.

Andrew Moon, who commentates on Portsmouth’s games for BBC Radio Solent, has offered Segecic some advice based on his analysis of Pompey’s recent matches.

On his ‘Who Needs Mousinho’ podcast, he suggested that Segecic has become a tad predictable by always trying to cut in on his left foot.

He said: “I still think he can cause problems from the right. We know he likes to cut in on the left, but Guy [Whittingham] has mentioned a few times in commentary he just needs to occasionally go down the outside just to keep them honest and cross one with his right foot, even if it doesn’t lead to anything.”

Segecic could return to number 10 role against Ipswich Town

Chaplin will be unavailable to play against Ipswich on Saturday as part of the conditions of his loan deal.

This could provide an opportunity for Segecic to return to a more central role just behind Colby Bishop.

Segecic will be keen to prove to John Mousinho that he’s the man to use in the ‘number 10’ role if he’s used there.

The problem is: there’s no obvious candidate to replace Segecic on the right wing if he is moved.

Mousinho may therefore opt to move John Swift forward into that playmaker role, keeping Segecic on the right and starting Luke Le Roux in central midfield.
