John Swift and the other Portsmouth players at risk of being hit by EFL ban
John Swift has been a good addition to Portsmouth since joining in the summer.
Swift joined Portsmouth on a free transfer after leaving West Brom and has started all of Pompey’s opening six games.
John Mousinho has utilised Swift in different ways since his arrival, relying on the 30-year-old’s experience in the Championship.
Portsmouth face Ipswich Town this weekend, and the former Baggies midfielder will need to be careful if he wants to avoid a ban from the EFL.

John Swift one booking away from ban
Swift picked up his fourth booking of the season against Southampton, putting him at huge risk ahead of this weekend.
EFL suspension rules state that any player who accumulates five yellow cards before gameweek 19 must serve a one-game ban
This means one more booking for Swift in the next 13 games will see him pick up a one-match suspension.
Connor Ogilvie, Regan Poole and Zak Swanson have all been cautioned twice and will also be in danger if they continue to pick up bookings.
Mousinho could do without his key players being suspended, so he will hope Swift has his wits about him going forward.

Portsmouth have taken a physical approach this season
Portsmouth haven’t had a red card yet this season, but they have certainly not been shy of a big challenge.
Eight different Pompey players have been yellow carded this season, as Mousinho looks to bring a physical element to his side.
Season stats | Portsmouth |
Yellow cards | 14 |
Fouls per match | 10.7 |
Tackles per match | 14.7 |
While his side needs to be more disciplined, the manager will be happy with his side’s willingness to get stuck into opposition players.
The Championship is a tough division, and players cannot be shy about putting a challenge in.
Fans at Fratton Park also appreciate players who fly into tackles and give their all for the badge, and will hope the team’s physicality continues.
