Portsmouth fans will hate to see new data – but John Mousinho might love it
Portsmouth travel to Ipswich Town on Saturday hoping to continue their good run of away form.
The Blues are unbeaten in their last five away matches, which is an incredible change of fortune considering how bad Portsmouth were on the road last season.
John Mousinho has credited the turnaround to Portsmouth developing a ‘defined identity’ off the ball. Indeed, they’ve only conceded once in three away games this season.
However, this new ‘identity’ has led to Pompey developing an unfortunate reputation based on new data.

Portsmouth are ‘most boring team in the Championship’
Portsmouth may be a sterner defensive unit, but they’re struggling to score goals as well. In their first five Championship games, they have scored just four times.
They’ve conceded five goals in the league. That means their games feature fewer goals than any other team in the Championship this season.
As most football fans would agree that goals are the most exciting part of the game, some might suggest this statistic makes Portsmouth the most boring side in the league to watch.

John Mousinho won’t be too worried about Pompey’s ‘boring’ statistic
Mousinho won’t be bothered about the lack of goals in Pompey matches. In fact, he may love it.
Data suggests that Pompey are creating chances, but failing to convert them. This is an issue that may fix itself over time.
It would be far more worrying if Portsmouth weren’t creating efforts on goal and/or leaking goals through unforced errors, as was often the case away from home last season.
Name | Goals |
Adrian Segecic | 2 |
Colby Bishop | 1 |
Andre Dozzell | 1 |
Colby Bishop is going through an unfortunate run of form, but Mousinho and the Pompey fans are backing him to turn it around.
With Conor Chaplin having signed on loan from Ipswich and Adrian Segecic showing some promising early form, this ‘boring’ stat might not stick with Portsmouth for long.
With that said, Mousinho may happily accept a goalless draw at Portman Road on Sunday. Ipswich are one of the stronger teams in the Championship and are very good at home.
If Pompey could shut them out with Nicolas Schmid and Conor Shaughnessy missing through injury, that would arguably be the biggest statement yet about their defensive solidarity.
