Portsmouth plot revenge on Watford after Boxing Day clash provided fireworks

Portsmouth are set to welcome Watford to Fratton Park on Wednesday as John Mousinho aims to get back to winning ways.

The 2-1 defeat against Ipswich at Portman Road on Saturday means that Pompey have gone all of September without a win, with their sole point coming in the South Coast derby.

While Portsmouth were excellent at the start of the campaign, concern about their form is growing ahead of the showdown against the Hornets.

On Wednesday, Portsmouth are the favourites to overcome Watford, with John Mousinho likely hoping to get revenge against the Championship outfit after last season’s controversial defeat.

Watford vs Portsmouth had plenty of controversial moments last season

In their Boxing Day meeting last season, Watford came out 2-1 winners at Vicarage Road. However, this was not without its controversies.

The hosts equalised in the second half up thanks to a penalty after Freddie Potts’ tackle on, but Pompey had claimed the offence occurred outside of the penalty area.

On top of this, Watford netted the winner late in added time, which prompted Baah to do a ‘Take the L’ dance in front of the travelling Portsmouth fans at full-time.

While the forward was sent off for these antics, it did little to quell the anger of the supporters.

Speaking to The News on 26 December 2024, Mousinho explained he was “furious” with the referee’s decisions throughout the match.

Now, Pompey have a chance to get revenge once again versus Watford on Wednesday.

While Portsmouth have since beaten the Hornets, they will no doubt want to repeat this trick after last season’s controversies.

With Watford currently struggling in the Championship, the match at Fratton Park could be a chance to pile on the misery for the travelling fans.

Portsmouth’s head-to-head record vs Watford

In recent years, Pompey’s record against the visitors is solid.

Portsmouth have actually won their last five home matches against Watford, a record that stretches back to 2006.

While their away form at Vicarage Road isn’t much to shout about, luckily, Pompey will not have to worry about that on Wednesday.

The South Coast club are in desperate need of three points, and hopefully, Mousinho is able to deliver this.
