Josh Murphy’s top three Portsmouth displays after penning new Pompey deal

Josh Murphy has put pen to paper on a new deal at Fratton Park.

Murphy signed a three-year deal at Portsmouth, keeping him on the South Coast until summer 2028.

Murphy has been injured since the Southampton draw with Pompey, really missing their star man.

It’s a real boost for John Mousinho, who now has a proven Championship player under contract for three more years.

Murphy picked up Portsmouth’s Player of the Season award in his debut campaign at Fratton Park and will look to continue that form this year.

Josh Murphy grabs his first Pompey goal

Portsmouth struggled at the beginning of last season and found themselves bottom of the table in November.

After going behind away to Hull, Murphy stepped up to bag his first goal in Portsmouth colours, just 20 seconds into the second half.

The winger fired from 12 yards that diverted off Lewie Coyle, into the corner to equalise and inspire a brilliant second-half performance.

Pompey could only manage a draw, but it ended a run of two straight defeats and marked a turning point in the season, which saw them go unbeaten in four of the next five games.

Murphy hits goal of the season against QPR

The winger helped Pompey to a third straight win at the end of February, getting a goal and an assist in a crucial clash against QPR.

Murphy curled in a stunning strike into the top corner in the 48th minute to break the deadlock.

He then went on a mazy run through the QPR defence, before setting up Matt Ritchie just three minutes later.

Murphy’s strike earned him the Goal of the Season award as Portsmouth ended February with 16 points at home in 2025, more than anybody in the Championship.

Murphy helps Pompey pull clear of relegation zone with moment of quality

Portsmouth came into the game against Blackburn with real fear of relegation after two successive defeats.

Murphy grabbed his seventh of the season after playing a one-two with Colby Bishop before beautifully curling into the bottom corner.

The winger later said the victory over Blackburn was his favourite one of the season as it was a real ‘scrappy’ win that mattered at the crucial part of the season.

Murphy enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign for Portsmouth and was one of the main reasons they survived relegation.
