Portsmouth backed to make ‘exciting’ Patrick Bamford deal to end attacking woes

Portsmouth’s attacking woes this season have been one of the South Coast club’s biggest problems.

So far this campaign, Pompey have only netted seven times in eight Championship matches.

In fact, Portsmouth’s 2-2 draw against Watford on Wednesday was the first time John Mousinho’s side have netted twice or more in a single match since their 5-3 victory over Norwich on Good Friday.

Colby Bishop’s form at Fratton Park has become a big concern, with the striker not having any real competition for the striker spot.

As a result, the free agent market could become a real possibility for Mousinho, with Patrick Bamford one of the biggest names without a club.

Martin Allen: Portsmouth should look to sign Patrick Bamford

Bamford has been left Leeds United in August, when the striker and the West Yorkshire club reached an agreement to end his contract.

The former England international was out of Daniel Farke’s plans after their promotion to the Premier League.

However, despite no longer possessing the ability to play in the English top-flight, the striker is likely still a top Championship striker.

Therefore, former Portsmouth midfielder Martin Allen has exclusively told Pompey News that Mousinho should look to sign Bamford to end their attacking woes.

He said: “That would be a fantastic move for Portsmouth. Patrick has still got something in him, I’m not sure it is at Premier League level.

“Whether he is still hungry enough, we will have to wait and see before we make that decision.

“But Patrick Bamford at Championship level would be a great signing for Portsmouth.

“That would be exciting, the fans would love it, and it would also give Patrick a fresh challenge in a new environment.

“I know it is a long way down to the South Coast, but if you play in front of those Portsmouth fans, you are a lucky person, you are a lucky player to get that opportunity to play for them.

“He can get goals, there is no doubt about it.”

Portsmouth need to solve attacking issues quickly

Portsmouth need to solve their attacking issues quickly. Whether that means signing a striker like Bamford or helping Bishop find his form, something needs to be done as a matter of urgency.

If Pompey could regularly find the net, they would probably be looking up towards the playoffs, rather than nervously over their shoulder.

Recent weeks have proven that Portsmouth have a strong defence, rarely losing a match by more than one goal.

Therefore, if Mousinho can fix this, Pompey could be in for an exciting season.

However, if not, it could be a campaign to forget, with pressure starting to mount on the manager.
