Portsmouth fans will be delighted to hear the news that Josh Murphy has signed a new contract.
Murphy penned a new deal at Fratton Park on Thursday that will keep him contracted to Pompey until 2028.
Both Portsmouth and Murphy himself announced the news on social media, with thousands of fans sharing their delight in the comments.
Murphy has been Portsmouth’s best player since he signed at the start of the 2024-25 season and other Championship clubs made bids for him in the summer, so it’s clever business to tie him down to a new deal now.
Portsmouth fans will be waiting for news on Callum Lang’s contract next
Murphy’s original contract expired in June 2027, but it’s a smart move to offer him a new contract as a reward for his service.
The deal will help erase any fears of Championship rivals trying to steal away him away from Fratton Park in January or next summer.
However, Portsmouth fans will be waiting for updates on the contract of Callum Lang as well.
Lang scored 10 goals for Pompey last season, and is also a crucial player. Since his hamstring injury, John Mousinho has experimented with several players on the right wing, but nobody has adequately replaced the threat that Lang can provide.
His contract expires this summer. It’s understood that the club are waiting for Lang to recover from his injury before continuing contract talks.
Once he’s back on the pitch, Pompey fans will be hoping to hear positive news regarding his future at Fratton Park.
Murphy contract will be a huge relief to Portsmouth fans
Portsmouth have been rather toothless in attack this season, and Josh Murphy’s injuries have been labelled as a key reason why they’ve only scored seven league goals this season.
Simply put, Pompey don’t have anyone else who can fizz dangerous crosses into the box with as much accuracy as Murphy.
Pompey don’t look anywhere near as electric in attack when Murphy is unavailable, and that’s why so many supporters were nervous to hear about other Championship clubs making bids for him.
