Portsmouth Football Club

Portsmouth were originally known as ‘Portsmouth Football and Athletic Company Limited’, founded in the late-19th century. They have since gone on to compete at all professional levels of the English football pyramid, spending their longest periods in the second tier. Pompey are the only island-based professional side in England, and were most recently in the Premier League between 2003 and 2010, winning the FA Cup in 1939 and 2008.

Portsmouth maintain the record for the longest time in possession of the FA Cup, having first lifted the trophy in 1939 and held it until 1946 after the Second World War. Pompey won the competition for a second time in 2008 under Harry Redknapp, qualifying them for the UEFA Cup (Europa League) for the first time. The Blues have won two English league titles in 1949 and 1950, and won the EFL Trophy as a lower-league outfit in 2019.

Fratton Park, Portsmouth

Portsmouth home stadium

Portsmouth have played at Fratton Park for their entire history, with the initial stadium structure built with the club’s foundation before the introduction of the 20th century. It is the only English league stadium not located on the Great British mainland, courtesy of the placement of Portsea Island which accounts for the large majority of Portsmouth city.

The first match to be played in PO4 was a ‘friendly’ win over arch-rivals Southampton in 1899, a 2-0 success attended by over 4,000 supporters. Fast-forward to 2024, and the ground burst into blue colour when the current squad were promoted to the Championship after a win over Barnsley.

Fratton Park’s capacity was recently brought up to 21,100, with new safe standing and seating projects put into the stadium. Plans were initially discussed back in the late 2000s for a 36,000-capacity waterfront arena near Gunwharf Quays, though these talks were abandoned.
