View: No excuses now as Portsmouth Women land final piece of promotion-winning puzzle
Portsmouth Women have further strengthened their promotion prospects by confirming the signing of defender Scarlett Williams.
The 19-year-old has previously spent time with Watford and Tottenham, while also representing Wales at Under-19s level.
Williams arrives after leaving Billericay, who also compete in the National League South, and will provide competition and cover at the back.
The youngster’s arrival for the final four games of the season was confirmed by Portsmouth on their official website on Saturday (30 March).
And it is a signing that has certainly got manager Jay Sadler excited, as he told the club’s website: “We wanted to get another centre-back in and Scarlett is someone we’ve been monitoring.
“We think she fits the position specific profile perfectly, especially on the ball. She is very quick and has got great recovery pace. With the ball she is very composed and can find the right passes between the lines.
“In terms of potential, she joins at a good age. I firmly believe there is a high ceiling and we’re positive the environment we’ve created here will support her growth in years to come.”
Portsmouth Women lead National League standings
While Williams did not feature in the 0-0 draw with MK Dons on Sunday (31 March), she could yet play a part before the campaign concludes.
Indeed, there are now no excuses to achieve the aim of promotion, which looks nailed on despite the stalemate at MK Dons.

That was just the second time this season Sadler’s side have dropped points, but they are six points clear of Hashtag United in second.
With just three games of the 2023-24 campaign remaining, there is no reason why Pompey cannot see the job through.
Whether or not Williams gets to play a small part in that remains to be seen.
