Matt Ritchie to Portsmouth transfer update as new offer already made

Portsmouth are still interested in signing Matt Ritchie, who is now a free agent after leaving Newcastle, according to Craig Hope.

However, writing on X on Monday (July 8), the journalist added that Pompey face fierce competition from Sheffield United, who have already presented an offer to the 34-year-old.

Ritchie who began his career at Portsmouth has previously expressed interest in coming back, with John Mousinho also keen on strengthening his squad ahead of Pompey’s Championship return.

Hope wrote: “Matt Ritchie has interest from Sheffield United. Portsmouth, too, but I’m hearing it’s SUFC who have made the free agent an offer.”

What are the chances of Matt Ritchie joining Portsmouth

Portsmouth’s upcoming return to the Championship after a decade has fans buzzing, especially with rumours swirling about Ritchie possibly returning to his old club.

Ritchie, who started his career at Portsmouth before moving on to clubs like Newcastle United, is now a free agent. However, his return might not be as straightforward as it sounds.

One big factor is Ritchie’s age and recent form. At 34, he might not be at his peak anymore, especially considering he didn’t play much last season at Newcastle.

Mousinho also hasn’t been clear about whether Portsmouth are seriously considering Ritchie, despite plenty of rumours [The Shields Gazette].

Money is also a big issue. Ritchie earned a lot in the Premier League, which Portsmouth simply can’t match. Other Championship teams like Sheffield United are also interested and can likely offer more money.

Portsmouth’s strategy for new players usually focuses on younger, cheaper talent. Signing Ritchie would be a departure from that approach and might be more about sentiment rather than smart planning.

So, while fans might dream of seeing Ritchie back in Pompey colours, it looks like there are quite a few hurdles to overcome before that can happen.
