Finance Expert: Portsmouth £9m shares investment good news despite uncertainty
Portsmouth recently seeing £9m worth of shares issued by the Eisners is good news for the club, according to sports finance expert Dan Plumley.
Following an investment of over £15m into various renovation projects at Fratton Park and the club’s Hilsea training facility, there has in recent weeks been this further encouraging financial update.
Plumley is impressed by what he has seen at Portsmouth over the course of the past few months, despite the uncertainty over what specifically the intentions are from the board with the £9m – which is again in equity.
“It looks good on paper,” he exclusively told Pompey News.
“It’s one of those where you don’t fully know what that money is going to be used for, but generally speaking, companies will issue new shares to investors to put money into the business.
“Whether that’s to fund new operations, or infrastructure – linked to the stadium stuff – or to pay off some debt, there’s all manner of what it can be used for, but it’s usually a good sign that they want people to come in and invest some money. We’ve seen that at Portsmouth and when you roll that in with promotion last season, they’re a club on the up and it seems to be positive news.”
Portsmouth progressing on and off the pitch
Over the course of the past 15 years, there has seldom been as much positivity around Portsmouth than right now.
With many skeptics criticising the intentions of the Eisners at first, the stance on the ownership has certainly tilted as time has progressed and obvious development is being seen on the pitch under John Mousinho.
The redevelopment works of the facilities to improve the environment for players and staff, also enhancing Pompey fans’ matchday experience, will ensure the club are not left behind in reestablishing themselves as a second tier outfit.

What must be said is that some fans are reserving their outright judgement on the hierarchy at Fratton Park until the conclusion of the summer transfer window, with the squad still requiring strengthening and funds needing to be invested into transfers to sustain a competitive streak in the Championship.
It’s so far, so good for Portsmouth as the opening weekend trip to Leeds draws ever closer.
