Jacob Farrell spotted at Portsmouth training ground amid speculation
Portsmouth fans online have discovered a new face at the club’s training ground believed to be Australian left-back Jacob Farrell.
Via a post on X from Pompey fan page @Pompey_pjc [19 July], a player looking strikingly similar to Farrell was spotted alongside CEO Andy Cullen at the Blues’ training complex in Hilsea.
John Mousinho is keen on adding Australia U23 man Farrell to his ranks [Andrew Moon, 19 July], with the player having represented Central Coast Mariners since 2021 and won the last two A-League Premiership titles.
Portsmouth close to Farrell capture
That Portsmouth are nearing the completion of Farrell’s signing is an interesting one for a number of reasons.
Firstly, the two-time A-League Premiership champion would become the third Aussie in Mousinho’s squad alongside Kusini Yengi and Sam Silvera – with the added potential of an Alex Robertson return wished for by Pompey fans.
Furthermore, the left-back berth was not one that was immediately identified as a pressing need for Pompey – more so on the right-hand side, although Zak Swanson’s contract extension has now been confirmed by the club.
Connor Ogilvie and Jack Sparkes are currently the two options at left-back, with Farrell’s imminent arrival possibly providing Mousinho with the flexibility to operate a wing-back system when he sees fit – Ogilvie possibly dropping into the left of a back three.
Farrell has been highly thought of in the A-League for a number of years now despite being just 21, and is set to make a challenging new step across to the Championship.
