David Norris shares Elias Sorensen worry despite debut Portsmouth goal vs Leeds United
David Norris shared “one worry” he has about Elias Sorensen despite the striker netting on his Portsmouth debut against Leeds United.
The former Newcastle United striker signed from Danish outfit Esbjerg nearly two weeks ago and went on to get Pompey off the mark in the Championship, scoring his side’s first goal in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Elland Road.
Sorensen had previously struggled to get going in England having failed to make the first team on Tyneside, and saw a couple of loans not work out too effectively.
“I’ve not heard or seen too much of Sorensen, but from what I have seen he has some likeable qualities,” ex-Blues man Norris exclusively told Pompey News.
“He’s very athletic, and he links that play with the wide areas with the way Pompey like to play.
“I think he could be a good fit long-term – the only worry is just with him not having lit it up anywhere before his recent spell back in Denmark.”
Portsmouth desperately needed forward cover
Whilst Portsmouth are pretty well stocked when it comes to wide players, central striker options have been hard to come by for John Mousinho.
The purchase of Sorensen – whose goals helped Esbjerg achieve what Pompey did last season and earn promotion to the second tier – bulked out that area at his disposal.
It was certainly a buy that proved crucial, as Kusini Yengi picked up a minor injury to join potential long-term absentee Colby Bishop on the sidelines – meaning Sorensen was the club’s only fit senior striker on the opening weekend.
And his powerful strike midway through the first half – significantly against the run of play – turned out to be the moment which sparked the team’s confidence to take a result from a rollercoaster clash at Elland Road.

The roar the goal ignited from the away end in West Yorkshire was almost unmatched – the sheer relief and satisfaction of “we are back” in celebrating the first Championship goal scored by Portsmouth since Luke Varney in April 2012. This was the season Norris spent at Fratton Park, with a few memorable moments of his own.
Hopefully the goal – largely out of nothing other than a smart pass from Marlon Pack – will be the catalyst of confidence Sorensen needs to have found his place in English football.
