John Mousinho explains why Ibane Bowat did not feature for Portsmouth v Sunderland

John Mousinho has explained the reason behind Ibane Bowat not featuring for Portsmouth against Sunderland on Saturday (31 August).

Bowat was signed for around £500,000 as Pompey’s sole deadline day recruit, a tall and bustling centre-half from Premier League side Fulham.

He was an unused substitute as the Blues were beaten 3-1 by the Championship leaders, the club’s first defeat of the season as they remain in search of their maiden win.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent’s Andy Moon [31 August], Mousinho reasoned: “Ibane had a limited pre-season in terms of minutes, as there was a definite realisation he would leave Fulham.

“He left on good terms, but just didn’t have it in him to start. We only got him into the building on Friday to train, and with everything going on, it’s as far from being prepared to come in and play as possible.

“He’s a top young talent who we’ll see a lot of, I think.”

Portsmouth complete Ibane Bowat deal

Having completed the deadline day permanent switch for Bowat, Portsmouth ended the transfer window having made 15 first-team signings.

Bowat joins after two productive loan spells in the Netherlands and Austria, and the former Chelsea academy starlet brings an imposing physicality which could be vital in the Championship.

The centre-half options at Mousinho’s disposal are currently restricted, but with everyone back fit will be a blessing for the Blues head coach.

Bowat turns 22 on the day of Pompey’s next league match, as they take on West Bromwich Albion after the international break.

It will be a steep learning curve this season, but as the squad settles, there is an expectation of a steady, healthy campaign.
