View: Connor Oglivie issues persist at Portsmouth, Mousinho must take action v Hull

Portsmouth have again rued their defence in conceding against Hull City on Saturday, in desperate search of a return to winning ways.

The Championship contest on Humberside [2 November] was aimed to represent a fresh start for John Mousinho’s side – to whom the head coach has made three changes, but Connor Ogilvie’s continued presence at left-back is one of the issues they face.

Ogilvie – not for the first time this season – let the opposition deliver a ball in from their right flank, in this instance too easily allowing Bachir Belloumi to supply Joao Pedro for the first goal of the afternoon.

Regan Poole was also at fault as Joao Pedro got across him too easily to guide the ball past a returning Nicolas Schmid in the Portsmouth goal.

Connor Ogilvie one of several struggling with step up for Portsmouth

Ogilvie raised his stock in Portsmouth’s last outing on 25 October, opening the scoring from close range to put Pompey ahead against Sheffield Wednesday.

However, aside from a couple of impressive performances, he has been one of a few too many to struggle with the demands of the Championship.

Far from the sole offender for a Blues team approaching the new month rock-bottom of the second tier, Ogilvie has disappointed in between conceding critical fouls, inviting crosses and shots and suspect marking.

Fellow left-back Jacob Farrell, two-time A-League champion in Australia, has struggled to stay fit since arriving from Down Under which has enabled Ogilvie to largely keep his position unchallenged.

The 28-year-old signed a new contract in the summer – only Marlon Pack and later Zak Swanson were offered new terms after expiring deals in June – but is so far representative of a difficult campaign.

Pompey take on Plymouth Argyle and Preston North End following the Hull trip within the next seven days.
